MHS tennis beats Pointers, Chargers

The Mathews High School tennis team has continued its winning streak, with convincing wins over West Point and Middlesex.

On May 1, the MHS girls traveled to West Point and shut out the Pointers, 9-0.

Starting off playing doubles, the number-one duo of Maddie Brown and Madelyn Johnson defeated Kathy Michos and Zole Browder, 6-1, 6-1. Playing second-seed doubles, Chloe Sanderson and Sarah Brown played exquisitely against Dianna Haraway and Mattie Britt, beating the West Point girls, 6-1, 6-1. At third seed, Ali Haynes and Caroline Evans battled against Kelsey Bantel and Megan Bantel. However, the twins are ineligible because they are eighth graders, so they only played an eight-game pro set. Haynes and Evans won, 8-2.

In singles play, Maddie Brown used her topspin forehand to her advantage to beat Michos, 6-0, 6-0. At number two, Johnson used her swift serve and outstanding backhand against Browder to win, 6-1, 6-1.
