MHS tennis beats Appomattox in regional play

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team defeated Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, 5-0, in Tuesday’s Region A team semifinals at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

Mathews will play the winner of Rappahannock-Northampton today at the Howard Mast Tennis Center in Suffolk for the team finals to determine who will travel to the VHSL State Tournament next week at Radford University.

The first win on Tuesday for Mathews was sixth-seed Carlyn Tillage, who defeated Madison Vanworth, 6-2, 6-0. Next off the court with a win was #4 seed Mercedes Wells, who beat Erika Jaimes, 6-1, 6-0. Fifth seed Kate van Emmerik took the next win over Caroline Rhodes, 6-0, 6-2. Leanne Moughon played a strong number three to record the Lady Devils’ fourth win, beating Asal Najmi, 6-2, 6-2.
