MHS tennis advances to regional title game

The Mathews High School tennis team defeated the defending Region A champion Rappahannock Raiders 5-1 in Tuesday’s regional semifinal match. The team will go to the Howard Mast Center in Suffolk this morning as the Lady Devils will play for the Region A title.

Also, Aly and Amy Collins were scheduled to face their Rappahannock opponents (Lori Gagnon and Abby Goszka) yesterday in the regional doubles semifinals. Aly Collins was set to take on Gagnon in the singles semifinals yesterday afternoon.
In the team match against Rappahannock, Aly Collins defeated Gagnon 6-3, 6-0; second-seed Amy Collins beat Goszka 6-3, 6-3; fourth-seed Mallory Hurst outlasted Jessica Snead 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in an amazing 3 ½ hour match; fifth seed Mercedes Wells defeated Megan Parker, 6-4, 6-4, and sixth seed Lamar Saunders beat Rex Jones, 6-2, 6-3. The Devils’ only loss came in the third-seed match, where Kasey Lynn Lyerly fell to Amanda Fallen, 6-1, 6-0.
