MHS tennis advances in region

After a 5-0 win over Franklin in Monday’s regional quarterfinals, the Mathews High School girls’ tennis team advanced to yesterday’s Group 1 Region A semifinal match, hosting West Point.

With a victory Wednesday, the MHS girls would play the winner of the other regional semifinal match—Rappahannock v. Windsor—for the regional title at 10 a.m. Friday. If Rappahannock wins, Mathews will host; if Windsor wins, the Lady Devils will travel to top-seeded Windsor.

On Monday, Franklin’s sixth-seeded player could not play so the Broncos had to forfeit sixth-seed singles and third-seed doubles. That meant that Mathews only had to play first- and second-seed doubles and the #5 singles, as MHS only needed three wins to secure a 5-0 victory.
