MHS splits varsity/JV soccer doubleheader

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team lost Monday to the visiting West Point Pointers, 6-0. The loss drops the team’s record to 1-4 overall. The junior varsity Devils, on the other hand, crushed the Pointers, 8-0, in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

West Point tapped in a goal on its first corner kick roughly five minutes into the game. Six minutes later the Pointers scored again, capitalizing on a through ball that gave them a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Noah Lewis.

The defensive line, consisting of Calvin Kramer and Justin Jenkins on the inside and Joel Metzger and Sean Carlson on the outside, was worn down by the quick passes of the Pointer offense. West Point scored twice more ito take a 4-0 halftime lead.
