MHS softball comes just shy of state playoff berth

The 2021 Mathews High School softball season came to end Friday, with a 3-1 loss in the Region 1A championship game at Rappahannock.

To advance to Friday’s championship game, the #2 seed Lady Devils defeated the visiting Essex Trojans last Wednesday, 8-3. Emily West recorded a complete-game victory for Mathews in the circle.

West also helped out her pitching efforts by hitting a home run and a single. Other offensive standouts included Abbie Hudgins (two singles, RBI), Reese Brock (single, RBI), Aly Jackson (single, RBI) and Kelsey Ryan (single, RBI).

Two days later, Mathews came up just short against the #1 ranked Raiders. West pitched another complete game and also collected two singles. Aly Jackson had a triple and an RBI, while Brock had a bunt single and Ryan also picked up a single.
