MHS soccer teams open spring season

The Mathews High School soccer program recorded a series of strong results over the past week, starting with a sweep of Northumberland on Friday. The varsity girls secured a 2-1 victory, with Meredith Salvadori accounting for both Mathews goals. The varsity boys followed with a dominant 6-1 win; Stanley Ouma led the charge with two goals, while Franklin Cardenas, Elias Hidalgo, Henry Sowers, and Eric Cardenas each added one to the scoreboard. The teams returned to action on Monday night with split results. The boys’ program traveled to Rappahannock High School, where the JV coed team suffered a 3-0 loss. The varsity boys played to a 1-1 draw in a double-overtime battle, with Elias Hidalgo scoring the lone goal for the Blue Devils. Back at home, the varsity girls defeated Westmoreland in an 8-0 mercy rule victory. Salvadori led the scoring with four goals, leading her to six goals for the season.
