MHS soccer teams navigate challenging 3-game schedule

The Mathews High School soccer teams navigated a challenging three-game schedule over the past week, resulting in a mix of outcomes for the varsity and junior varsity programs.

The week began last Wednesday with strong performances against Nandua and Carver Academy in two home games. The girls’ varsity team secured a 10-0 win over Nandua, driven by a balanced offensive attack. Meredith Salvadori led the scoring with three goals, while Ellie Congrove added two. Shelby Ray, Leah Hyde, Kristen Hudgins, Allean Rowe and Hannah McBurney also contributed goals. Shortly after, the boys’ varsity team earned a 9-0 victory over Carver. Adam Greve, Salvador Cardenas and Elias Hidalgo each scored twice, with additional goals from Elton Hudgins, Franklin Cardenas and Chance Higginbotham.

The teams faced a difficult road trip to Lafayette High School on Thursday. The junior varsity team dropped a 7-0 decision, and the boys’ varsity team fell, 6-1, with Franklin Cardenas scoring the team’s only goal of the match.

The busy week concluded on Monday with home games at Middlesex. The girls’ varsity team played a competitive match but ultimately fell, 6-2, with both Congrove and Hyde recording goals. The boys’ varsity team finished the week with a 5-1 victory. The scoring was spread across the lineup, as Henry Sowers, Salvador Cardenas, Hidalgo, Stanley Ouma and Andre Smith each found the back of the net.

The Blue Devils were scheduled to face West Point High School Wednesday with all three teams competing at home.
