MHS soccer teams fall to Cavaliers

The Mathews High School varsity and JV soccer squads suffered tough losses on Monday night as they traveled to King William High School.

A late corner kick spelled the difference in the varsity contest, as the Cavaliers broke a 2-2 tie to win the contest, 3-2. The JV Devils, meanwhile, suffered a 4-0 shutout to King William.

The varsity match started in favor of the Cavaliers, who broke the ice early on. Although the Devils found themselves trailing only 10 minutes into the contest, they bounced back quickly. Miles Maggioncalda tied the game, 1-1, off a free kick from Will Hutcheson midway through the first half.

Mathews played shorthanded between numerous injuries and illnesses, but managed to hold on until halftime with the score still tied. Although King William maintained most of the possession, the MHS defensive line held strong and kept their opponents from scoring.
