MHS soccer splits pair of Tidewater District games

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team split a pair of games against Tidewater District foes this past week, beating King William last Wednesday, 2-1, and falling, 2-0, to West Point on Monday.

In last Wednesday’s game, the visiting Cavaliers struck first late in the first half, but Mathews immediately answered the call with a goal by Kevin Jenkins, assisted by Will Hutcheson.

The second half was much more interesting than the first. Numerous yellow cards were given to both teams, along with a controversial red card being handed out to Jenkins, which resulted in Mathews playing a man down for the rest of the half.

Despite the hindrance, Jordan Bozza was able to score a goal off a penalty kick, giving the Blue Devils the lead. The 10 Mathews players held on to the lead for the remainder of the game.  West Point
