MHS soccer posts shutout wins over Panthers, Pointers

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team picked up a pair of shutout victories in recent action, beating Charles City last Wednesday, 8-0, by the slaughter rule and pulling out a 2-0 win over rival West Point on Monday on the Pointers’ home turf.

The Mathews varsity took an early lead over the visiting Charles City Panthers thanks to Jordan Bozza, Kevin Jenkins and Mark Wilson all scoring quick.

Before Charles City could regain its footing, Will Hutcheson, Ricky Rutter, Zach Foss, and Jenkins scored again, rocketing Mathews ahead to an 8-0 lead which it held until the 60-minute mark, when the referees enacted the slaughter rule.

On a slow night for Blue Devil goalie Jacob Maggioncalda, Mathews played the West Point Pointers Monday. It took the better part of two halves to secure the victory.
