MHS soccer loses a pair of close contests

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team dropped a pair of close contests last week, falling to King William, 2-1, last Wednesday and dropping a 5-4 nail-biter on the road on Friday.

The junior varsity Devils did much better in the lead-up to Spring Break, tying the King William Cavaliers, 3-3, and posting an impressive 4-1 victory over the Indians.

The Cavaliers opened the scoring last Wednesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the first three minutes of play. The Devils evened up the score midway through the first half as a clearance from Calvin Kramer on the defensive line connected with Miles Maggioncalda, who was able to place the shot just past the opposing keeper.

King William scored the deciding goal with only seconds remaining in the half. The Cavs continued to dominate possession in the second half and, in spite of Mathews getting off a few shots, none managed to get by the King William keeper.
