The Mathews High School varsity soccer team traveled to Williamsburg last Thursday, where the Devils fell to a very strong Bruton team, 5-0. The junior varsity Devils fared better against their Panther counterparts, with the two teams tying, 2-2.
In the varsity contest, Bruton was able to break through the Devils’ defense and get an early goal in the opening minutes. A little disheartened by how quickly Bruton scored, the Blue Devils began to think more defensively, hoping to prevent more goals from being scored. Even with more people on defense, Bruton was able to punch through and score two more goals in the first half. Bruton added a pair of second-half goals to complete the shutout.
JV Devils
Last Thursday’s game started out well with the JV Blue Devils able to hold off Bruton’s offense with some success. Both teams had shots on goal, but none from either team would reach the back of the net leaving the score at 0-0 when the whistle blew ending the first half.
The second half didn’t seem to be going as well when Bruton scored pretty quickly, and not long after, increased its lead to 2-0. Despite trailing, the Devils weren’t ready to give up. Nathan Jenkins was able to score a goal, and right after that another goal was scored for Mathews when there was some miscommunication between Bruton’s defense and their goalie.
Mathews was scheduled to travel to Middlesex last night. Monday night’s home game against West Point, which was postponed due to rain, will be played tonight, with the JV game starting at 5:30. The Devils end the season with an away game at King William on Monday and a home match May 20 against Lancaster.
