MHS soccer earns first victory

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team earned its first win of the season on Monday night, beating the visiting Lancaster Red Devils, 3-2.

Mathews started the first half with a fierce offense, scoring the first goal of the game in less than three minutes. Glenn Musgrove was able to get a cross pass to P.J. Johnson in front of the 18-yard line, putting the Blue Devils up 1-0. As the half continued, the offense refused to stop; Musgrove took the ball from Lancaster at the 50-yard line and weaved through the Red Devil defense to score an unassisted goal. Mathews jumped ahead, 3-0, after Cody Greenfield scored off an assist from Johnson.

Lancaster fought back during the second half, scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. Mathews, however, held on for the win, ending the game with more shots on goals, saves, and assists than Lancaster. Musgrove and P.J.
