MHS soccer drops two district games

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team dropped a pair of Tidewater District games last week to Middlesex and West Point, dropping the Devils’ season record to 1-12.

In spite of one of the team’s best efforts, the Devils lost last Wednesday to Middlesex, 3-2. On Monday, Mathews was shut out by the Pointers, 8-0.

Middlesex started strong against Mathews, scoring two first-half goals. Keeper Landon Garrett managed eight saves in the first half, while, on the offensive end, captain Tyler Tillman scored the first Mathews score off a pass from fellow captain Glenn Musgrove.

The game remained close throughout the second half, with sophomore P.J. Johnson heading in a kick from his brother, junior Jacob Johnson, with less than three minutes left to play. Garrett, meanwhile, gave up only one second-half score while handling 16 shots on goal.
