MHS soccer dominates Pointers, 7-1

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team dominated the visiting West Point Pointers last Wednesday, beating the Tidewater District foes, 7-1.

Carson Brown led the team in scoring with two goals. Andrew Greve, Cameron Stearns, Fabian Cardenas, Dylan White and Aiden Sowers scored one goal apiece. Greve, Brandon Gandee, and Sowers had two assists each. Goalie Jackson Putt ended the night with 15 saves.

“I’m definitely proud of the way the team played,” head coach C.K. Ambrose said. “It was a battle at the beginning and we had opportunities early but we just weren’t able to capitalize. It was 2-1 with about 12 minutes to go in the game and then we had a weather delay.

“When we came back from that I was nervous about the team being flat, but it was the other way around,” Ambrose said. “They had a burst of energy.
