MHS soccer defeats Middlesex, Carver

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team picked up a pair of wins against Tidewater District opponents last week, beating Middlesex by a 3-1 margin on Wednesday and Carver Academy by a 7-1 score Monday.

The Devils returned from Spring Break on April 8 against West Point; that game was called due to inclement weather with the teams tied, 2-2. The game will be finished on May 1 when the Pointers come to Mathews.

In the West Point contest, Mathews struck first as a ball played over heads of the West Point defensive line by Will Hutcheson opened up Miles Maggioncalda for the breakaway goal. The Devils went up, 2-0, on a second goal from Maggioncalda, assisted by Laney Hall. The half ended with Mathews up, 2-1; the game was called off with 10 minutes left to play.

On Wednesday night, Mathews was propelled by Maggioncalda’s hat trick to beat the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 3-1. Hall provided a pair of assists.
