MHS soccer blanks Indians, 5-0

After dropping preseason contests to Gloucester and Bruton, the Mathews High School varsity soccer team won its regular season debut on Monday night at Northumberland, shutting out the Indians, 5-0.

While Mathews failed to score in its two preseason scrimmages against the much bigger AA and AAA schools (Mathews lost to Gloucester and Bruton by 5-0 and 2-0 scores, respectively), they had no such trouble against the Indians.

Junior Jesse Sekatawa scored his first goal of the season, assisted by senior captain P.J. Johnson. Johnson himself had two goals, one a header off a cross from freshman Jordan Bozza and the other a shot around the Indians’ goalkeeper. Returning senior Justin Jenkins scored from outside the 18 to start off his season and sophomore Ricky Rutter placed his shot in the lower 90 for his goal after an assist from senior Kelly Nelson. Defenders Rutter, Sam Gale and Anna Hudgins held the defense, allowing only three shots on goal.
