MHS soccer beats Carver, falls to Islanders

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team found itself on both ends of a shutout in a pair of home games this past week, beating Carver Academy, 7-0, last Wednesday and falling to the Poquoson Islanders on Monday, 6-0.

The scoring began quickly against the Carver Wolverines, with the first goal occurring six minutes into play. Nathan Jenkins put the ball into the back of the net, following up on a shot that was bobbled by the Carver goalkeeper. Nine minutes later, Jenkins scored again on a shot assisted by Sawyer Hutson.

The next Mathews goal came in the 16th minute of the first half; a shot placed in the goal by Jonny McCann on a fast break initiated by a long cross from Will Hutcheson. Only three minutes later, Hutson put a shot past the Carver goalie after intercepting a pass near the 18’.

The Mathews defense played a spectacular first half, allowing few shots and taking a 4-0 lead. The goals continued for Mathews in the second half, starting with a shot by Lucas Nunnally...
