MHS soccer advances to regional semifinals

After winning the Conference 42 tournament with wins over Cumberland and Middlesex, the Mathews High School varsity soccer team defeated Windsor on Tuesday by a 9-1 margin to advance to the Region 1A East semifinals.

Mathews was scheduled to travel to Staunton to face top-seeded Riverheads yesterday in the playoff game.

Middlesex

Mathews claimed the Conference 42 tournament title on Friday by defeating the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 6-1. Mathews had already beaten Middlesex soundly during the regular season, and although the Chargers beat West Point, one of the better teams in the district, in a game earlier in May, the Blue Devils were still fairly confident that victory was imminent.
