After winning the Conference 42 tournament with wins over Cumberland and Middlesex, the Mathews High School varsity soccer team defeated Windsor on Tuesday by a 9-1 margin to advance to the Region 1A East semifinals.

Mathews was scheduled to travel to Staunton to face top-seeded Riverheads yesterday in the playoff game.

Middlesex

Mathews claimed the Conference 42 tournament title on Friday by defeating the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 6-1. Mathews had already beaten Middlesex soundly during the regular season, and although the Chargers beat West Point, one of the better teams in the district, in a game earlier in May, the Blue Devils were still fairly confident that victory was imminent.

Stuart Anderson opened the scoring for Mathews with an assist from Mark Wilson. The Chargers had a few of their own chances on the Mathews goal, but before any of Middlesex’s shots bore fruit, Anderson scored a second goal with help from Kevin Jenkins. Anderson then got the hat trick on a bre...
