MHS soccer advances in playoffs

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team advanced to the Tidewater District tournament championship game and earned a spot in the Region A playoffs after defeating King William on Monday, 3-2.

The Devils ended the regular season with a 4-0 shutout over Middlesex and an 8-3 loss to King William.

In Monday’s playoff, due to a change in formation from previous encounters, Mathews confused tthe home-standing Cavaliers for the first 30 minutes.

"King William came out overconfident, not expecting a game from us," MHS coach Craig Raines said after the victory. "We brought lots of heart and soul into this game tonight, and we hope we can continue to carry it for the rest of this tournament."
