MHS runners win regional meet

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both took first place at the VHSL 1A Region A Championships last Thursday at Eastern State Hospital with team scores of 18 and 35, respectively.

Cameron Stearns finished first overall with a time of 17:47, followed by Seth James in second with a time of 18:45, Carson Brown in third with a time of 19:03 and Dylan White finishing in fifth with a time of 19:30. Gavin Dustin ran a 19:40, followed by Andrew Greve (20:04) and Jaxon McDonald (20:37).

For the girls, Adelle Hudgins finished first for Mathews and third overall with a time of 23:24, followed by Melody Smith in fourth with a time of 23:27. Zoe Camp ran a 24:35, followed by Anna Raub (24:36), Lillian Bane (24:43), Lorena Carballo (25:18) and Zoe Goodwin (26:08).

Mathews is scheduled to compete in the VHSL Class 1 State Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Green Hill Park in Salem.
