MHS runners win district championships

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams claimed 2019 Tidewater District championships last Wednesday.

The squads traveled to Eastern State in Williamsburg to compete against Carver Academy, King William, Middlesex and West Point.

This was a very successful race for Mathews, which had many all-district runners, meaning they placed in the top seven of the race. All-district runners on the girls’ team included Zoe Goodwin (second place, district runner-up), Avery Betz (third place), Abbie Hudgins (fifth place), and Melody Smith (seventh place).

All-district runners on the boys’ team included Cameron Stearns (first place, individual district champion), Josh Rosadino (second place, district runner-up), Isaiah Bivins (third place), Braden Hunley (sixth place) and Dennis Wood (seventh place).
