MHS runners take fourth, sixth at state meet in The Plains

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams capped off successful seasons Friday at Virginia High School League championships at the state course at Great Meadow in The Plains. The MHS girls placed fourth out of 12 teams, while the MHS boys finished in sixth place.

Mathews boys also earned an All-State selection—Jordan Jenkins finished 13th overall with a time of 17:29 to claim that honor.

The weather was perfect for racing, and both teams were excited. The girls’ race started around noon. The first runner to finish for the Blue Devils was Rileigh Betz (21:58), followed closely by Skylar Lewis (21:59). They finished in 20th and 21st places, respectively.

Reilly Price (22:05) was close behind them, finishing 27th overall. The next two runners to finish were Avery Betz (22:26) and Jaysen Hall (22:46), who came in 31st and 45th places, respectively. Lizzie Stokes (23:27) and Ellie Gale (23:32) completed the Blue Devils’ top seven roster, a...
