MHS runners place second in region; nab state berth

Blue Devil harriers were runners-up for both the boys and girls in last Wednesday’s Region 1A meet, which was held at Pocahontas State Park. The second-place finishes secured the teams a berth in Friday’s state meet, which will be held at Great Meadows.

This is the second year in a row for the girls and the first year in five that the boys have not won the meet outright. Mathews as a whole had the best ranking out of all the teams in the region by earning second on both sides. Rappahannock County won the girls’ meet, while Altavista claimed the regional title for the boys.

Mathews placed three girls on the All-Region team, which is limited to the top 15 finishers. Rileigh Betz placed fifth with a time of 20:59.89. Reilly Price came in 12th at 21:50.04. And Alyssa Curko finished 14th at 22:08.52. The other two of the top five for Mathews were Maddie Hobert and Emma Hudgins finishing with times of 22:13.34 and 22:16.93, respectively.
