The Mathews High School cross country team started the 2015 season on Tuesday afternoon on its home course at Gloucester’s Beaverdam Park, with a win against Washington and Lee, Essex, King William and North-
umberland on both the girls’ and the boys’ sides.

The girls’ team won with a score of 20 points over Washington and Lee (41), King William (forfeit), Northumberland (forfeit), and Essex (forfeit). The boys’ team won with a score of 22 points over Washington and Lee (41), King William (77), Northumberland (forfeit), and Essex (forfeit).

For the girls, Ellie Armistead placed second overall with a time of 22:38. Although Armistead had a phenomenal race, she could not contribute to team points because she is an eighth grader.
