MHS runners capture conference titles

Mathews High School cross country runners continued to break records last week with the fifth straight conference title for the girls and eighth straight for the boys. Both of these constitute the longest running streaks for their respective teams.

In last Wednesday’s conference meet, the MHS boys (21 points) beat out Middlesex (52) and West Point (59) for the crown. The same order held true for the Lady Devils, who won by a score of 23, compared to 43 for Middlesex and 68 for West Point.

The individual championships went to Ridge Ellis from Middlesex for the boys, with a time of 16:44, and Rileigh Betz from Mathews for the girls, with a time of 21:27. King and Queen also had runners in both races, but not enough to constitute full teams in either; hence, will not be moving on to the 1A Regional Championship as a team. Mathews, Middlesex, and West Point, however, will all be advancing to the regional meet this Wednesday.
