MHS runners advance to state meet

The Mathews High School cross country teams competed in the 1A Region championship meet last Wednesday at Eastern State in Williamsburg, with the boys’ team finishing as regional champs and the MHS girls as region runners-up.

Both the MHS boys’ and girls’ teams earned the right to compete in the Class 1 State Championships, which will be held on Saturday in Salem.

In the regional meet, Mathews runners competed against squads from West Point, Lancaster, Middlesex, Washington and Lee, Chincoteague, Northampton, Rappahannock, Northumberland and Essex.

It was a successful day for the Mathews harriers, with 11 earning the title of All-Region for placing among the top 15 finishers in the two races.

Making All-Region for the girls were Avery Betz (sixth place), Abbie Hudgins (seventh place), Zoe Goodwin (ninth place), Melody Smith (10th place) and Caroline Bray (14th place). ...
