MHS rowers win gold, silver in state regatta

Mathews High School senior Sebastian Knebl and junior Fletcher Rich captured gold in the men’s senior double, and senior James Raha took silver in the men’s single during Saturday’s Virginia Scholastic Rowing State Championships at Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan.

This was the second consecutive Saturday of state championship races at Occoquan. The first day, which is held mostly for novice events, ran at the same time as 30th annual Mathews High School Regatta. The day two varsity level regatta consisted of 47 teams making 205 entries for 28 final events.

MHS competed in the men’s and women’s senior double events and the men’s senior single, which required heats to make finals later in the day.

The straight final in the women’s double event had seniors Aileigh Daniel and Rachel Witt race well but miss a bronze medal placing by two tenths of a second behind Albemarle, Western Albemarle and Hylton but ahead of Granby.
