MHS rowers take silver, bronze at state regatta

The Mathews High School crew took one silver medal and one bronze in Saturday’s 2017 Virginia State Rowing Championship Regatta at Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan.

Placing second overall for Mathews was the men’s senior four, while the women’s junior double captured third.

Blue Devils Sebastian Knebl, Fletcher Rich, Zach Cummings, Landon Hudgins and cox Ailiegh Daniel turned in the second fastest time in the preliminary heats, and ended up in second place in the men’s senior four finals with a time of 5:49.22, behind a strong T.C. Williams crew (5:47.0) and ahead of Lake Braddock (6:00.25), Stone Bridge (6:04.27), First Colonial (6:16.74) and Mount Vernon (6:18.74) in the 1,500 meter race.

The first boat to compete for Mathews was the women’s junior double. Olivia Wood and Mandy Moran qualified for finals with the third fastest overall time in the heats. In the finals, Wood and Moran claimed a bronze finish in their first taste of state competition....
