MHS rowers perform well at home regatta

The Mathews High School crew and its parent volunteers hosted the 28th annual MHS Regatta Saturday on the East River at Williams Wharf.

Racing in nearly ideal conditions, 18 teams attended the event with four teams from Northern Virginia, two from Richmond, one from Charlottesville and the rest from the Tidewater area.

MHS head coach Tim Ulsaker, who has run all 28 contests, reported that this year’s event saw more than 820 rowers and coaches competing in 50 different races, many requiring six, seven and eight lanes, in front of a crowd estimated to be easily over 2,500 people. With the events spaced on eight-minute centers, the regatta still managed to run and finish on time.

In MHS crew results, the young, small Blue Devils team managed some success, netting two silver, a bronze and four fourth-place finishes for the women, and two gold, two silver and three bronze finishes for the men.
