MHS rowers compete at Al Urquia Regatta

The Mathews High School crew traveled to Northern Virginia on Saturday for the team’s second Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association race of the season at Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan. The Al Urquia Regatta consisted of 35 teams racing 240 entries.

MHS competed in four entries with two events requiring heats to make finals later in the day. In straight finals, for the men’s single event, senior James Raha came in first with a 21-second lead over a J.E.B. Stuart entry, with two Albemarle entries trailing in third and fourth place.

In other blue ribbon results, senior Sebastian 

Knebl and junior Fletcher Rich won the men’s senior double event (5:18) a full minute ahead of Potomac with Stuart taking third. The MHS boys’ rival double from Albemarle was scratched due to illness so they will have to wait until this Saturday’s regatta in Mathews to find out who is top in the Virginia rankings.
