Although their seasons are over, the Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams continue to receive accolades. Players from both squads were named to the All-Region 1A teams, it was announced this week.

For the girls, sophomore Ellie Armistead earned a first-team selection, while senior Yolanda Fells was named to the All-Region second team. Freshman Stacie Thomas received honorable mention.

Seniors Elijah Willis and Jalen Matthews were named to the boys’ All-Region team. Willis earned a second-team selection, while Matthews made honorable mention.

Both the MHS boys and girls advanced to the regional tournament. The Mathews boys lost in the opening round to Middlesex, while the Lady Devils won their first game, falling in the regional quarterfinals to Lancaster. ...
