MHS opens tennis season with 5-4 win over Warhill

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team traveled to Warhill High School in Williamsburg last Wednesday to face the Lady Lions in the first match of the season. The Lady Blue Devils defeated the 4A Lady Lions by a 5-4 margin.

The match didn’t start out well for Mathews, as the top-seeded Sarah Brown fell to Stepha Ilardi, 8-0, and #2 singles player Avery Betz dropped her match against Sydney Canton, 8-4. The first Mathews win came at #3 singles, as Caroline Evans shut out Andrea Maninany, 8-0.

The fourth- and fifth-seed singles players for Mathews, Connie Johnson and Alex Mills, respectively, picked up two more wins for the Devils; Johnson defeated her challenger, Peaches Branscomb, 8-1, while Mills defeated Angelia Pleis by an 8-0 margin.
