MHS netters blank West Point, fall to Lancaster

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team played some good matches recently.

On Monday, April 27, they played away against West Point and won, 9-0, with Lyla Duff (8-2 over Sheloir Johnson), Ella Ward (8-1 over Xinyi Chen), Delaney Boatman (8-0 over Kendall Hylton), Charlotte Bailey (forfeit), Jayda Thomas (8-4 over Chloe Sharpe) and Jordan Sadeg (8-3 over Sophia Lacy) all posted singles victories.

In doubles play, Duff and Ward beat Johnson and Chen, 8-3; Boatman and Bailey defeated Hylton and a substitute player from West Point, 8-1, and Thomas and Sadeg completed the shutout, winning 8-0 against two West Point substitute players.

Lancaster

Mathews faced Lancaster on Monday of this week, and although the Lady Blue Devils played hard, they fell to the Red Devils, 5-4. Posting wins for MHS, in singles play, were #3 seed Boatman, who beat Vanika Murfield, 8-1, and #5 seed Thomas who won, 8-3, against Izzy Dew. The second-seed doubles team of Boatman and Bailey beat Murfield and Izzy Miette Wolfe, 8-0; and third-seed partners Thomas and Sadeg won, 8-5, against Dew and Angelina Smith.

The MHS girls were scheduled to play at home against Middlesex. On Monday, the MHS girls will host West Point at 4 p.m. which will be Senior Night for the Mathews girls; the team’s graduating seniors will be recognized.
