MHS, MRA rowers win at home regatta

The Mathews High School crew and Mobjack Rowing Association hosted their first home regatta of the season Saturday at Williams Wharf Landing on the East River.

After the first scheduled home race was cancelled due to extreme weather, MHS and MRA were happy to see sunny skies and light winds as they hosted Great Bridge, Grassfield, Granby, Gloucester, First Colonial, Norfolk Collegiate, Bishop Sullivan Catholic and Stone Bridge who came from Loudon County.

Out of 23 scheduled events, MHS and MRA crews entered seven each in either 1,000 or 1,500 meter races.

MHS took gold in the men’s varsity four, men’s varsity quad, men’s double and men’s single. MHS took second in the men’s second four and third in the women’s single.

Mobjack rowers won the women’s novice four and women’s junior four, was second in the women’s varsity eight and women’s varsity quad and third in men’s varsity eight.
