MHS men’s varsity four, women’s second four win at Occoquan

The Mathews High School crew made all their finals and took home two first-place finishes, two seconds and two fourths in Saturday’s Darrell Winslow Regatta at the Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan.

In the men’s varsity four, first-place finishers Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell, Lance South and coxswain Kaitlyn Thompson pulled the fastest time (5:22.9) in the heats and came back in the final to turn in a 5:12.1 win, defeating  longtime rival Langley, followed by West Springfield, Great Bridge, Thomas Jefferson and Woodbridge. In the women’s second four final, novice coxswain Alyssa Curko steered Jamie Robins, April Young, Emma Hudgins, and Logan Howlett to 6:13.8 blue ribbon finish ahead of Fairfax, Gloucester, W.T. Woodson, Gar-Field and Westfield. In their second race of the season, novices Alec Thompson, Josh Miles, Caleb Johnson, Zach Cummings and cox Maddy Hobert took a hard-fought silver finish behind Madison High in the men’s novice ...
