MHS men’s varsity four takes gold at Occoquan

The Mathews High School crew fared well at Saturday’s Virginia State Rowing Championships held at Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan, netting one gold medal and two silvers from five entries.

Winning the gold for Mathews was the undefeated Blue Devils’ men’s varsity four of Zach Payne, Cole Johnson, Phillip Machen, Andrew Merz and coxswain Trevor Thomas. After getting the fastest time of the two qualifying heats, the MHS boys advanced to the finals, where they won by 7.6 seconds ahead of St. Albans, followed by T.C. Williams, Norfolk Academy, Gloucester and Langley.

The men’s second four of Adrian Phillips, Gus Bauby, Matt Oliver, Tucker Blackwell and cox Lance South took silver behind winner Langley and a second ahead of third-place James River in a five-boat final.
