MHS in sixth place in Wells Fargo Cup standings

At the conclusion of the 2016-2017 winter season, Mathews High School is ranked sixth among Group 1A schools in the 2016-2017 Wells Fargo Cup standings with a total of 127.5 points.

First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports and athletic competitions—the state champions’ state champion.

Mathews earned 22.5 points in the winter season, with those points coming from the boys’ basketball team earning a berth in the state tournament.

In the fall, Mathews earned points for volleyball (45 points as state runner-up), the girls’ cross country team (35 points for fourth place statewide) and the boys’ cross country team (25 points for sixth place).

George Wythe (Wytheville) currently leads this year’s standings with 217.5 points. Last year, MHS finished in third place in Wells Fargo Cup standings with 205.5 points. ...
