MHS harriers win first meet of season

The Mathews High School cross country team made its season debut last Thursday, competing on its home course at Gloucester’s Beaverdam Park. Five schools participated—Northumberland, Essex, King William, Washington and Lee and Mathews—with the Blue Devils winning both the girls’ and boys’ races.

The Mathews girls ran first and won with a final score of 31 points. With the main pack starting out near the middle, the girls picked it up and ended up near the front by the time they reached the finish line.

The team was led by a group of four—Jaysen Hall (24:18), Rileigh Betz (24:18), Ellie Gale (24:19) and Reilly Price (24:26). Close behind them was Avery Betz (24:47), who finished off the Lady Devils’ top five. Abigail Hudgins (24:47) also did well, finishing with Avery Betz, but since Betz is in eighth grade, her points cannot count.
