MHS harriers remain unbeaten

The Mathews High School cross country teams continued their unbeaten streaks by picking up wins last Wednesday at Northumberland. The Lady Devils advanced to 12-0, while the MHS boys improved to 13-0.

The Lady Devils demolished all competition, scoring 22 team points to defeat West Point (42), Lancaster (67) and Northumberland (forfeit). The Mathews boys ended the meet with 27 points, beating Lancaster (33), Northumberland (72), West Point (107) and Christchurch School (129).

The Blue Devils were missing some of their top runners on both sides, but still managed to achieve victory by pack running. “Our runners were rewarded for their toughness and I was proud of how they responded to such a challenging course,” coach Drew Greve said.

Nancy Barnhardt again led the Lady Devils to victory with a time of 23:48 and an overall second-place finish. Following Barnhardt were Kate van Emmerik (24:36), Ryann Smith (25:58), Logan Howlett (27:15), Sami Stroup (27:50), Kristen Fauber (29:42) and Louise Baynat (30:21).

Kyle Slaughter received first-place overall at the meet, 18 seconds ahead of all competitors, with a time of 19:41. Finishing shortly behind Slaughter in a pack of three strong were Sam Jasinski (20:49), Tucker Blackwell (20:50), Justin Adams (20:53). Rounding out the boys’ top seven were Tommy Mayo (21:33), Ricky Rutter (21:42) and Elisha Kane (23:49). Jalen Thomas and Ryan Morgan, both eighth graders, had good races with times of 22:58 and 23:39, respectively.

The Blue Devil harriers traveled to Middlesex yesterday to defend their undefeated record.
