MHS harriers place first, second at Tuesday’s meet

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country teams traveled to the West Point County Club on Tuesday to face runners from Essex, King William, Northumberland and the host Pointers. The MHS boys came in first, while the girls placed second to West Point as a team.

Blake Hunley led the way for the Blue Devils’ boys with a time of 17:43. Jon Jenkins and Chance Higginbotham both crossed the line with a time of 18:40. Next for the Devils were Dominic Winters with a time of 19:42, Adam Greve (20:10), Cole Christensen (20:12), Ivar Golden (20:13), Justin Martinez (21:34), Marvin Ouma (JV) (22:24), James Allen Morgan (23:16), and Lincoln Williams (24:50). The boys had a rough race but pushed through the pain and their strength led them to a strong showing.

For the girls, Elizabeth Moore placed first overall with a time of 22:38. Coming in next were Allean “Beanie” Rowe with a time of 23:24 and Paige Morris not far after with a time of 24:08. Next for the Lady Devils were Morgan Stearns with a time of 26:29, Lyla Duff (27:07), Jordan Sadeg (27:19), Kylee Swanson (28:02), Gracie Hellebrandt (JV) (28:07), Keira Cannon (28:10), Rayann Helbig (30:10) and Grace Keel (32:39).

The girls have invited a few new girls to the team and are excited to see what the future holds for them. Both the boys and girls return to action next Wednesday, Oct. 1, in a meet at Beaverdam Park.
