The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both took home first place in the Virginia High School League 1A Region A Championships Thursday at Newport News Park.
Seth James and Adelle Hudgins both placed first individually in the boys’ and girls’ races, respectively, and were awarded plaques for this accomplishment. Also at the meet, coach Drew Greve was named the Region A Coach of the Year for the boys’ and girls’ teams and was also awarded two plaques.
James finished the boys’ race with a time of 17:01. Gavin Dustin was next for Mathews with a time of 18:14, followed by Chance Higginbotham (18:31), Salvador Cardenas (18:42), Jaxon McDonald (18:46), Jon Jenkins (19:02) and Andrew Greve (19:19).
For the girls, Hudgins finished the race with a time of 21:43. Melody Smith finished second overall with a time of 22:26 and Anna Raub finished third overall with a time of 22:31. Zoe Camp finished next for Mathews with a time of 23:56, followed by Lilly Bane (25:21), Morgan Stearns (25:45) and Lyla Duff (28:20).
Both Mathews teams finished with team scores of 27.
The Mathews harriers will compete on Saturday in the VHSL Class 1 State Meet in Salem.
