MHS gridders show improvement in loss to Raiders, 38-20

The Mathews High School football team continues to show improvement. While the Devils fell to the visiting Rappahannock Raiders, 38-20, on Friday night, the squad put in one of its most consistent performances of the season.

Mathews (0-5) will look to pick up its first win this Friday when the Devils host the King and Queen Tigers in the MHS homecoming contest; opening kickoff is at 7 p.m.

In last Friday night’s game, Rappahannock opened up an early lead on the Devils, holding a 19-0 edge heading into the closing minutes of the first half. The Devils then capitalized on a fumble recovery by Nathan Shaw, with Jarius Monroe scoring the first of his two touchdowns in the game; his two-point conversion closed the gap to 19-8 at halftime.

In the third quarter, tight end Chance Spencer scored on a 10-yard pass from Monroe for the Devils’ second score. The final MHS touchdown came in the fourth quarter, as quarterback Jovan Johnson connected with Monroe on a 43-yard TD pass. ...
