MHS golfers play pair of 9-hole matches

After an extended weather break, the Mathews High School golf team returned to action at Brickshire Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The match was cut from 18 to nine holes due to the impending inclement weather. Mathews’ opponents on the day were Warhill and the host New Kent Trojans.

New Kent brought two complete teams, which were split up and each scored separately. Robb Kinder of New Kent was the low scorer of the match, leading the school’s A squad to a total of 172 strokes and the win. Warhill came next, with a team score of 175. New Kent’s B team placed third with a score of 188. Mathews rounded out the team scoring with 220.

The Devils were led by Matt Jenkins, with ended the day with 40 strokes. He was followed by Chase Lewis (51), Colton Barrick (60) and Laney Hall (69). Although the team did not have the best showing of the season, they hoped to turn it around the next day as they traveled to Quinton Oaks Golf Course for the team’s final nine-hole ...
