MHS golfer qualifies for state tournament

Mathews High School golfer Jacob Jackson finished fifth in Monday’s Region A tournament, which was held at Quinton Oaks Golf Course near Callao.

Jackson was one of two MHS players to qualify for regional play, with Corbin Smith turning in 23rd place in the competition, according to Blue Devil golf coach Nick Naglieri.

"On the whole, the Mathews golf season didn’t go as I had figured it would go," Naglieri said. "I had thought that King William would win the district, which they did—in fact they won the region—but I thought for sure we would finish second and have the whole team go to regional play; however as they say, that’s why you play the game."
