MHS golf team completes season

The Mathews High School varsity golf team competed in its last two matches of the season recently.

The first was on Sept. 25 at Hobbs Hole Golf Course against the Middlesex Chargers. The match was the Tidewater District qualifier and both teams needed to compete in order to advance to the regional match.

The Blue Devils narrowly missed getting the win, finishing with a total of 403 strokes over 18 holes. The Chargers finished with a total of 395, led by Joe Sears with 91. Mathews was led by Matt Jenkins who finished the day with 91. Chase Lewis and Cole Huff both finished with 95; Colton Barrick rounded out the team score with 122.

Although the squad did not get the win on Tuesday, the team advanced to the 18-hole regional final on Monday. Seven teams attended the match: Essex, Northumberland, Lancaster, Rappahannock, Windsor, Middlesex and Mathews.
