MHS golf season comes to an end

Mathews High School golfers competed against teams from Middlesex, Central Lunenburg and Cumberland last Wednesday in the Conference 42 Tournament, which was held at the Piankatank River Golf Club in Hartfield.

The teams shot an 18-hole round on a wet, rainy day. Winning the tournament was Middlesex, which shot a final team score of 357 strokes. Central Lunenberg came in second with 378 strokes, Cumberland finished third with 432 strokes, and Mathews finished fourth with 450 strokes.

The tournament MVP was Chase Grubbs of Cumberland, who shot a 74 over 18 holes, which was eight strokes better than anyone else in the field. If not for his performance, Mathews would have finished in front of Cumberland in the final standings. Matt Jenkins had the low score for Mathews, shooting a 106. Zach Dehoux also shot well, improving his score for the back nine holes by nine strokes, for a total of 107.
