MHS golf begins season

The Mathews High School boys’ golf team made its 2018 season debut earlier this month. The team is again led by head coach James Hutcheson, along with assistant coach Brooke Aldridge.

The team fielded seven golfers this summer. Returning golfers Cole Huff, Matt Jenkins, and Chase Lewis are all members of the junior class. Laney Hall and Colton Barrick both joined the squad as freshmen this season. The eighth grade class added rookies Thomas Hubbard and Ethan Long.

The team’s first match was a head-to-head competition against Northumberland High School on Tuesday, Aug. 7. The Indians got the win for the nine-hole match, with a total team score of 174. Mathews finished with a stroke total of 219. Low scorer was Patrick Lewis of Northumberland, who finished with 40. Contributing scores for Mathews were provided by Huff, who had 49 to lead the team, Jenkins with 53, Chase Lewis with 56, and Barrick with 61.
