MHS girls win tournament opener

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team wrapped up regular season play last Thursday with a win over King and Queen. The Lady Devils went 21-2 on the season, losing only to regional rival Northumberland High School and Group 3A Poquoson High School. They were 10-0 in Conference 42 play.

MHS easily defeated the Lady Tigers last Thursday in straight sets, 25-8, 25-10 and 25-10. Standouts were seniors Brittany Mitchem with eight kills, two digs, and two assists, and Mariah Robinson with six kills and three aces.

Freshman Victoria Bing added four kills and three aces. Madison South had 15 assists while Sarah Brown had seven.

Following the regular season, Mathews entered Conference 42 tournament play Monday evening as the #2 seed. The Lady Devils hosted the #7 seed, Central of Lunenburg, in the tournament quarterfinals. The Devils did not have much trouble with the Chargers. They took control early and never struggled, defeating them in straight sets, 25-7, 25-13 and 25-13.
